New Safe Boating Course Requirements
Attention Institute Boaters! New York State has introduced a Safe Boating Course requirement to enhance safety on its waterways, following the implementation of Brianna’s Law. This law mandates that all motorboat operators complete an approved boating safety course, with deadlines based on age.
The law’s phased approach requires anyone born after January 1, 1988, to already have completed the course. By January 1, 2025, it will apply to all motorboat operators, regardless of age. This means anyone piloting a motorized vessel in New York State must have a boating safety certificate on hand.
Those caught operating a motorboat without the required certification may face fines ranging from $100 to $250. Repeat offenses could lead to steeper penalties and legal repercussions.
The course, available online and in-person, covers key topics such as navigation laws, emergency procedures, and equipment safety. Upon completion, participants receive the certification needed to legally operate a motorboat.
